Edinburgh Castle dominates the city of Edinburgh like no other castle in Scotland, and Edinburgh Castle is unequalled in the whole of the British Isles. Over one thousand years of history sit on top of the famous Edinburgh rock, and when you see Edinburgh Castle you will understand why over a million visitors a year visit Edinburgh Castle.

When you come to Scotland and visit Edinburgh Castle you will see why the early inhabitants of the area we now call Edinburgh, made their first settlements here, in what is now the city of Edinburgh. People have always sought a safe refuge, and the volcanic rock that forms the base of Edinburgh Castle, has always afforded the ultimate safe and defensive position in Edinburgh.

The City of Edinburgh grew outwards from the Castle rock, and the first houses in Edinburgh were built on the area in front of Edinburgh Castle, which is now known as the Lawnmarket, and then the house building continued down the High Street and The Cannongate towards the Royal Palace of Holyrood House. These streets collectively form a single street known as The Royal Mile. The Royal Mile acquired its name over the ages as Scottish and English kings, queens and royalty in general, have travelled to and fro between the Palace of Holyrood House and Edinburgh Castle – hence the name The Royal Mile.

No visit to Edinburgh is complete without a visit to Edinburgh Castle, and once you have ventured up to the highest parts of Edinburgh Castle’s structure, you will be overwhelmed by the spectacular views of Edinburgh afforded from this Scottish “Castle of Castles”.

Edinburgh Castle is every schoolboy’s dream of what a castle should look like and the Edinburgh Castle website endeavours to give the Edinburgh visitor an in-depth view of Edinburgh Castle and it’s history from early times right up until the present day.

The visitor to the Castle is awarded with magnificent panoramas in every direction when they visit the Castle. No matter whether you are on the lowest levels of the Castle, or the highest points, visitors are delighted by what can be seen. When you look to the north, on a clear day, you can see the mountains of The Kingdom of Fife in the distance and immediately below you are the world famous Princes Street Gardens. Princes Street is unique in that the shops along its length are only on the north side of the street, so from them you have an uninterrupted view of the Castle. Beyond Princes Street is George Street the most original of Edinburgh’s Georgian New Town Streets – with shops along its length. Continuing to the north you have Queen Street which runs parallel to it. Beyond Queen Street the remaining New Town Preservation area is mostly residential, and the city can boast of having the most intact Georgian city in the whole of Europe, and has Unicef World Heritage Site status.

Apart from information on Edinburgh Castle, we have included lots of general information about Edinburgh in the website. You will notice we have sections covering Edinburgh accommodation which include Edinburgh Hotels, Edinburgh Bed and Breakfasts, Edinburgh Guest Houses, Edinburgh Self-catering Flats and Edinburgh Apartments. Other sections include Edinburgh Cafes, Edinburgh Entertainment, Edinburgh Restaurants, Edinburgh Weddings, Edinburgh Festivals and of course Shopping in Edinburgh. On Edinburgh Pubs and Clubs Guide website you can also find lot of useful information on where to relax and have fun in Edinburgh.

To book Dundas Castle or check availability, please call us on 0131 319 2039 or complete one of our enquiry forms.

Wedding Venue Scotland

We have been hosting special weddings large and small, for many years and have everything you need for a day filled with moments that you will treasure. What can be more romantic than marrying in one of Scotland’s most beautiful Castles, renowned for its magnificent and exquisite rooms and hallways.
At any time of year Dundas Castle can provide the most romantic setting that you and your guests will never forget.

Spring Wedding

You may choose to exchange your vows in the spring as a sea of daffodils cover the castle’s 1000 acres of beautiful wood and parkland. As the new leaves adorn the trees, you too can mark the start of your new lives together as you admire the magnificent views across the estate from the top of the Auld Keep.

Summer Wedding

The estate comes alive in the summer months as the rhododendrons bloom. The 2 mile long drive is lined with a riot of colour while the manicured lawns provide the most spectacular backdrop for photographs.

Autumn Wedding

As the autumnal leaves fall and the nights draw in, there is nothing more romantic than making your way up the candle-lit fairytale winding staircase where your groom awaits to exchange vows with you. These memories will live with you and your guests forever.

Winter Wedding

Imagine sharing your first moments together as husband and wife surrounded by your closest friends and family as you warm by the crackling open fires. Surrounded by the silk walls of the Library you can enjoy a closing nights ‘Dram’ of whisky.

Dundas Castle Wedding

Ceremonies

For a magical day that you and your guests will remember forever, historic Dundas Castle provides you with the most romantic and picturesque wedding ceremony venue that you could wish for. From the fairytale tower complete with winding staircase of the Auld Keep to the elegant chandelier lit Croquet room, your dreams truly will come true.

For the perfect Scottish castle wedding ceremony that is either religious, humanist or a civil ceremony, the Dundas Castle and estate offers you the most spectacular setting and atmosphere that will ensure that each and every moment is treasured by both of you and all of your guests.

Religious Ceremonies
The 15th Century Auld Keep with the original 3 feet thick walls of this tower and magnificent vaulted ceiling of the Great Hall is perfect up to 90 of your guests for your wedding ceremony. With the option of a video link throughout the Keep, larger numbers can also be catered for. Should you desire, you can use our “Chapel of The Smallest Portion” for a quiet prayer together before or after the ceremony.

Civil Ceremonies
Our Georgian Croquet Room, elegantly created with views across the lawns, is perfect for a Civil Wedding Ceremony for up to 80 guests. Following your ceremony, you are able to entertain your guests with a champagne reception in the comfort of the main house while the room is transformed for your sumptuous wedding breakfast for up to 60 guests. Should your numbers exceed 60 the Pavilion with its breathtaking views of the estate and floodlit castle is an equally as luxurious location for your first dinner with your guests as husband and wife.

Humanist Wedding Ceremonies
For couples who dream of walking down the aisle and experiencing the unparalleled romance and enchantment of marrying in the Great Hall of the Auld Keep, but do not wish to include a religious element to their service, a humanist ceremony is a perfect option. Humanist ceremonies are legally binding in Scotland so only one service is required, (as opposed to a civil ceremony followed by a humanist ceremony in other countries). The ceremony provides you with the opportunity to be as personal and expressive as you desire.

Humanist ceremonies may also take place in the Croquet room within the main house.

Outdoor Wedding Ceremonies
The spectacular Dundas estate is a breathtaking outdoor wedding venue with a variety of locations to fulfil any dream. For an open air wedding ceremony that is both romantic and unique, choose from a ceremony on the immaculate lawns with the dramatic backdrop of the castle façade or on a hill overlooking the sun glistened waters of the tranquil Dundas loch.

On the rare occasion that the Scottish weather is unkind, you will always have the option of inviting your guests inside where we will have transformed your chosen location into your ceremony room.

Dundas Castle Ceremonies

Wedding Accommodation in Scotland

As Dundas Castle is an Exclusive Use venue, the main part of the castle belongs solely to you during your wedding celebrations. Whether you are the bride and groom or a wedding guest, you are invited to make Dundas Castle your own. Sir Jack and Lady Lydia welcome you to share their happy home and indulge yourself in the luxurious surroundings of our fourteen bedrooms. Each room has a private bathroom and has been individually styled featuring antique furniture, original paintings, beautiful fabrics and luxurious linen. The spacious bedrooms are located throughout the house with views across the lawn, into the private courtyard or onto the Auld Keep.
You will have your own special area of Dundas to enjoy before the party starts and then to relax in later once the day has come to an end.

We have included items in the rooms to help make your stay comfortable including a powerful hair dryer, an iron, a trouser press and tea and coffee making facilities. In true Scottish style, a decanter of complimentary whisky is there to be enjoyed during your stay with us!

Dundas Castle Accommodation

Best Man ~ he replies on behalf of the bridesmaids, gives his speech and reads out any telemessages, emails and cards.

Speech Delivery
The speeches should be brief and typically should take no more than 5-15 minutes each. A nervous speaker who would like to do the bare minimum can simply concentrate on the main purpose of the speech which is to propose the toast and thank people. It is becoming increasingly more popular for the bride to say a few words if she wishes but it is seldom expected of her.

Marriage Schedule
Marriage Schedules must be handed in to the registrar of the district in which the ceremony will take place within 3 months of the date of the wedding and no later than 15 days before the date. For Dundas Castle weddings you will need to contact the district registrar in South Queensferry – 0131 331 1590. The marriage schedule can not be issued back to the bride and groom more than seven days before the date of the wedding and may only be collected by the bride and groom. The registrar will be able to tell you when it can be collected.

Welcome to Dalhousie Castle and Aqueous Spa

A fascinating 13th century fortress set within acres of wooded parkland on the picturesque banks of the river Esk. From the moment you arrive at Dalhousie Castle, one of the finest luxury hotels in Scotland, a warm Scottish welcome awaits. Whether relaxing in the fabulous Aqueous Spa, enjoying one of the library’s extensive collection of books and a drink from the ‘secret bar’ next to the open fire, dining in the ancient barrel vaulted dungeon on our exceptional cuisine or relaxing in your unique castle bedroom, you will always feel as welcome as the ‘Laird’.

This luxury Scottish castle hotel is also an ideal venue for your own traditional Scottish gathering, whether you are planning a ceilidh, banquet, wedding, conference or meeting, or, as an individual, maybe staying on a special break, you are looking for the best of Scotland’s hospitality with all the comforts of a four star Edinburgh Hotel.

Dalhousie Castle luxury hotel near Edinburgh in Scotland has very much kept its Scottish Castle character with features such as Falconry in the castle grounds, hydrotherapy spa with beauty treatments, luxury characterful bedrooms and a formal fine dining restaurant, yet just half an hour from Edinburgh city centre, Edinburgh airport and Waverley train station. Is there a more memorable way of visiting Scotland than by staying in a luxury Scottish castle hotel?

The countryside of Midlothian and the Scottish Borders is some of the loveliest to be found anywhere in the world. However, for over five hundred years it was also some of the most fiercely contested. Dalhousie Castle, standing just a few miles south of Edinburgh, occupied a position of great strategic importance, and so was witness to more than its fair share of history. What better setting could there be to enjoy Falconry, the sport of kings, with the Castle as a back drop.

It is ironic that a building, once so warlike, should have become an inviting Scottish castle hotel that now prides itself on the warmness of the welcome it extends to visitors.

Scottish Castle Weddings and Honeymoons

A Scottish Castle is the most idyllic wedding venue to make your special day absolutely perfect, with options that include your wedding ceremony in our chapel or a civil wedding ceremony in one of our fabulous function rooms. A wedding at Dalhousie Castle also means less to worry about: the ceremony, the reception and accommodation in the most majestic surroundings are all under one roof and the most romantically dramatic photo-opportunities.

Guests can enjoy the delights of nearby Edinburgh and the accessibility of Edinburgh Airport to make the whole wedding a special and memorable wedding occasion. A wedding at Dalhousie Castle is, after all, not just for the bride and groom on their wedding day but also for all those family and friends in attendance with a magnificent medieval Scottish castle as a back drop! “Truly, a wedding not to be forgotten”.

Steeped in turbulent history, the romance of Dalhousie Castle is all about the memories of the day and the splendour of Scotland. Indeed, it’s difficult to imagine a more romantic setting for a wedding ceremony or civil partnership ceremony, an occasion that will cast a spell on both the bride and groom and their guests, during the ceremony itself, afterwards at the reception and later at the celebration. Celebration which can take place in the same medieval castle in which Edward I or Mary Queen of Scots once stayed.

The weddings information pack gives you all the necessary information as to why a castle wedding at Dalhousie Castle is the ideal place to get married, with an impressive range of wedding ideas, such as wedding cakes, Falconry wedding ring deliveries by our own Dalhousie Castle Barn Owls, photographers, Scottish ceilidhs, spa treatments to help relax and enjoy your day all the more!

From time to time, we hold wedding fayres or shows that help inspire couples looking for ideas for their wedding day. If you would like information on when our next wedding show is taking place, please call our wedding office on 01875 822666 and one of our dedicated wedding coordinators will be delighted to update you and your partner.

von Essen has a Chauffeur driven Rolls Royce Phantom available for hire. Imagine arriving at your wedding in what many regard as the world’s finest car.
