A beautiful location, with memorable surroundings, makes the perfect setting for any event.

Bedrooms

Lady Ingilby has a fine eye for style and detail which explains why each of the twenty five luxury bedrooms is individually decorated and furnished and contains the sort of trimmings you would expect at a hotel of this quality.

Friends of the Ingilbys invited to stay at the Castle have been known to book themselves in at the Boar’s Head rather than spend the night at Castle : the hotel is much more comfortable!

Toy boats have been provided in each bathroom so all guests are able to push the boat out during their stay.

Welcome to Powderham Castle

Powderham Castle is located in a unique, picturesque setting beside the Exe estuary. Six hundred years of history are contained within the walls of one of England’s oldest family homes, this and a whole range of other exciting activities makes it a ‘must see’ for everyone.

Built in 1391 by Sir Philip Courtenay it has remained in the same family to this day, currently home to the 18th Earl of Devon. Having survived a great deal of damage during the Civil War, the Castle was restored and altered in later centuries. These days, visitors can marvel at the breathtaking medieval grand staircase and the stunning eighteenth century music room. The original Victorian Kitchen has recently been opened to the public, so visitors can now have a glimpse of life below stairs in the Earl’s household and appreciate how the 19th century kitchen would have been run.

Regular guided tours offer a fascinating walk through the Castle’s majestic rooms, where you can admire the most amazing architecture, hear some remarkable stories and learn about the family history. Our experienced guides are able to adapt the tour according to their audience to ensure our visitors enjoy an informative yet entertaining tour.

Outside there is acres of space to discover and explore too. The Castle is set in the middle of a deerpark, which is home to around 600 fallow deer. Visitors can join a Deer Park Safari and get closer to the amazing wildlife in the deer park. In the grounds of the Castle you will discover the Secret Garden, where you can meet our friendly Powderham pets and Courtenay Fort – our huge adventure play castle – always a hit with children. Birds of Prey will be soaring through the skies once again from 18 July to 30 August and as always we will have a fantastic calendar of events including the South West Wedding Show in February, themed weeks throughout the school holidays, Shakespeare in the Gardens in August and the Historic Vehicle Gathering in July. Latest details will be updated on our events pages.

A light snack or cream tea from the Courtyard Tea Room or even your own picnic in the grounds offers you the chance to relax and savour the atmosphere. With incredible views, a wealth of beautiful wildlife and a range of exciting activities and shops, it’s no wonder Powderham Castle is an attraction visitors come back to again and again.

Wedding Receptions

A very warm welcome awaits you and your guests at Powderham Castle – a magnificent 600 year old Castle, set amidst a beautiful Deer Park with breathtaking views across to the Exe Estuary. It is the family home of the Earl & Countess of Devon who are delighted to offer you the exclusive opportunity to use this splendid venue to celebrate your wedding. It is your wedding day and we believe in working with you to ensure that your day is the most magical and memorable day of your life.

Powderham Castle is a truly magical place to hold your wedding reception. The Music Room, Dining Room and Libraries were originally built to create an impression and designed for lavish entertaining – they still create a very memorable setting today.

The Castle rooms are available to hire throughout the year and there are many different room hire combinations to suit your individual requirements. Powderham Castle is an extremely flexible venue for wedding receptions. We can cater from 2 to 170 guests and if you would like a larger occasion you can even put up a marquee in the Deer Park.
Welcome to Peckforton Castle FalconryPeckforton Castle Falconry is based in the grounds of the magnificent Peckforton Castle, the castle is situated amongst the Peckforton Hills which offer fantastic views of the surrounding Cheshire countryside.

Our collection of birds of prey range from owls, hawks, falcons, and eagles which can be found by day weathering on the castle lawns. We also pride ourselves on having a variety of British species in the collection as two of our main aims are education and conservation.

We offer a range of activities with the birds of prey which can include hands-on encounters flying the birds at the castle, corporate entertainment with the birds and free flying displays to name but a few. Everything you need to know should be here on this site but if you would like to find out more please feel free to contact us!

Weddings

Why not include something amazingly different for your wedding day?

Delivery of Rings:

Have one of our owls fly down the aisle the aisle to the best man when the delivery of the rings comes round in the ceremony.

Wow your guests as suddenly the bestman raises his arm to an owl gliding gracefully down the centre of the guests. Watch their faces as the ring bag is unclipped from the owls leg as it returns back to its handler and then disappears out of sight!

Meet, Greet and Flying Display

Have our magnificent Golden Eagle meet your wedding guests as they arrive at the venue. Once the cermony has finished, why not not entertain your wedding party with a fantastic bird of prey flying display.

In that awkward time to fill in between drinks and the wedding breakfast our falconers can amuse your guests with an informative yet entertaining demonstration of our flying team. We can also provide a chance for the Bride and Groom to have their photogragh taken with some of our birds!

Cheshire Peckforton Castle Golden Eagle

Family Encounter

Am amazing chance for the whole family to experience the thrill of being able to have a bird of prey flying to their gloved hand. Spend an hour with us at the castle where you can all enjoy the opportunity to fly some of the birds from our magnificent collection. We can normally incorporate 3 birds into the session where everyone can have a go. We can accomodate children as young as 4 years of age, where we will use smaller species, so they don’t feel to overwhelmed by the whole situation. Overall a fantastic family experience for all to enjoy.

The encounter is based on 2 adults and 2 children but more can be added for a small additional fee.

Cheshire Peckforton Castle Family Encounter

Corporate

Peckforton castle is a truly unique setting to wow your corporate clients. In the tranquil surroundings of the castle, its the perfect place to relax and get away from the stress and hustle and bustle of working life. With fabulous conferencing facilties incorporated, why not break up the day by taking advantage of using our falconry team. They can provide and tailor a package to whatever time and needs you may have.
Why not take time out through the day to watch a fantastic flying display within the castle walls, where the birds will be swooping and soaring over the audiences heads.
Equally as popular is to incorporate your guests into being able to get a little more interactive with the birds. Each of your clients can have the opportunity to don a glove and have a go at having one of our spectacular birds flying to their fist. This can make a great team building exercise and we also have other activities that can be incorporated into the day e.g. archery, abseiling, etc.

Either of the above can be arranged to be at a venue of your own choosing.

Set in 500 acres of beautiful parkland, a visit to Leeds Castle in the garden of England is full of discovery. Open all year round, its special blend of heritage and history, glorious gardens, attractions, programme of events, and licensed restaurant make it the perfect choice for a day out.

Visitors are transported through the castle’s history; an eclectic mix of period architecture, with sumptuous interiors and family treasures.

Our internationally renowned aviaries offer a fascinating glimpse into the world of modern conservation and captive breeding programmes. Swans glide on the moat and waterways, peacocks wander through the grounds and birds of prey soar on the wind during our falconry displays.

The gardens offer continuous colour throughout the year. From a mass of spring bulbs and wild flowers in the Wood Garden, through fragrant herbs and roses in the quintessentially English Culpeper Garden, to late flowering borders in the drought-resistant Mediterranean Lady Baillie Garden.

Conferences, meetings, weddings and banquets can also be arranged in the castle and other areas on the estate.

Leeds Castle is not just a museum but also a place where people meet and special events bring the grounds to life.

Weddings at Leeds Castle – A Day to Remember

Create a lifetime of memories for you and your wedding guests at Leeds Castle. Surrounded by 500 acres of parkland and gardens, Leeds Castle is an idyllic setting for the most romantic of weddings in any season.

The castle and its magnificent grounds are owned by the Leeds Castle Foundation – a charitable trust established in 1974 by the castle’s last private owner, the Hon Olive, Lady Baillie. She, like so many other illustrious owners, fell in love with Leeds, and its care and conservation became her life’s work.

A choice of venues within the castle and its grounds combine to create the perfect setting for your wedding ceremony and celebrations. From your initial enquiry to the great day itself our service is tailored to meet your specific wishes and ensure that your wedding day is perfect.

The Library, Dining Room, Gatehouse and Maiden’s Tower are all licensed for civil marriage and partnership ceremonies. A choice of impressive settings is also available for your reception – from banquets in marquees on the lawns, to small intimate gatherings of family and friends in the castle.

Leeds Castle offers a host of finishing touches including musical entertainment and stunning flower arrangements prepared by the castle’s florist, along with wines and champagnes from the castle’s extensive Norman cellars. And when it comes to photographs, Leeds Castle, set in the valley of the River Len in the heart of the Garden of England, must be unrivalled for its spectacular scenery and backdrops.

Kent Leeds Castle Wedding

Leeds Castle Wedding Open Day

Leeds Castle will be hosting an open day to showcase the choice of venues within the castle and grounds for wedding ceremonies and celebrations.

This is an ideal opportunity for individuals or wedding planners to have a personal showround of Leeds Castle. Your pre-booked appointment will take in a tour of the Gatehouse, the Henry VIII Banqueting Hall, the Castle Dining Room, State Bedrooms and the Fairfax Hall.

You will also be given our up-to-date venue information and details of our brand new wedding packages.

The Dining Room

The Dining Room was redesigned for Lady Baillie by leading interior designer, Stéphane Boudin, whose other clients included the Duke and Duchess of Windsor and Jackie Kennedy.
Eighteenth century tapestries line the Dining Room walls together with selected pieces of Chinese porcelain. The use of soft pastel colours and delicate lighting gives the room a light, airy feel.

The Dining Room provides an intimate location for ceremonies, small reception parties and dinner celebrations. The Library and Dining Room can be used in any combination to create the perfect venue for smaller occasions.

Suggested capacities
Ceremony 60
Dining 50
Reception Drinks 100

Kent Leeds Castle Dining Room

Fairfax Hall and Terrace Room

The magnificent Fairfax Hall is an immaculately restored Kentish timber-framed barn that dates from 1680.
In a similar style, the adjoining Terrace Room offers some of the most breathtaking views of Leeds Castle. Doors lead out on to the terrace where guests can mingle on a summer’s evening as they watch the castle’s ancient stone walls in the twilight.

The two are usually combined to create a splendid and memorable setting. Celebrate in style as you and your guests dance the night away, enjoying stunning views out over the castle.

Suggested capacities
Fairfax Hall and Terrace Room combined:
Dinner and Dance 170
Fairfax Hall:
Dinner and Dance 140
Dinner only 170

The Gatehouse

The Gatehouse is in one of the oldest parts of the castle and dates from the 13th century.
Built by Edward I to strengthen the castle’s defences, it now forms an impressive entrance to the Castle Island. At night, the massive oak doors are locked, as they have been for the last 700 years, to keep the castle and its guests safe and secure.

Entirely self-contained, the Gatehouse’s facilities include a reception area, private bar, cloakrooms and ceremony room, which offer an historic and intimate setting for marriage ceremonies and receptions.
If you wish to celebrate your day with a larger number of guests in the evening, the Fairfax Hall and Terrace Room can be used as your reception venue.

Suggested capacities
Gatehouse reception drinks, ceremony and dining 25
Gatehouse reception drinks and ceremony 50
(Dining in Terrace Room 50, or dining in Fairfax Hall 170)

Kent Leeds Castle Guest Room

Henry VIII Banqueting Hall

Situated in the Gloriette – the 13th century castle keep – the Henry VIII Banqueting Hall is named after the castle’s most famous owner, and architect of many changes to the building. He was responsible for installing the magnificent bay windows, the panoramic views from which have changed little over the centuries.
The largest room in the castle, measuring over 70ft in length, the Henry VIII Banqueting Hall provides a glimpse of what entertaining must have been like in Tudor times.

With its heavily beamed ceiling and 16th century carved fireplace it is a majestic room, which can seat up to 100 guests for dinner. The hall is traditionally furnished and a blazing log fire provides the finishing touch in winter. Dancing can also be arranged in the nearby Heraldry Room.

Suggested capacities
Dining 100

Accommodation

For the perfect end to the perfect day, the castle
itself can accommodate up to 38 guests in 20
luxurious bedrooms.
The castle’s 20 bedrooms are all exquisitely furnished with beautiful antiques, fine paintings and objects d’art collected by Lady Baillie over the years. Five have four-poster beds, and many have art deco marble-lined bathrooms installed in the 1920s. The views from many of the rooms – overlooking the moat and parkland – are as sublime as the decoration and furnishings.

A further 15 bedrooms are available in the charming Culpeper Garden Suite, just a few minutes walk away from the castle island and within easy reach of the Fairfax Hall and Terrace Room. These rooms can be booked in conjunction with events in the Fairfax Hall and Terrace Room.

Stay at Leeds Castle on your wedding night or relax with family and friends over an intimate dinner in one of the cottages surrounding the beautiful gardens of the castle.

The Castle Rooms

The magnificent rooms within the castle provide a memorable setting for your wedding. Once you are through the front door the castle becomes yours for the night.
The rooms can be used in any combination. Our team can advise how the rooms could be used to their best effect according to the style and capacity of your wedding.

Library
Adjoining the Dining Room, the Library is an excellent reception area, or it can be used as a venue for dinner.

Heraldry Room
As its name suggests, this room displays the coats of arms of the private owners of Leeds together with royalty associated with the castle. Today, guests use this room to dance and enjoy evening entertainment, or for pre-dinner drinks.

Drawing Rooms
The Yellow and Thorpe Hall Drawing Rooms provide the perfect place in which to relax after a long, enjoyable day. Curl up on the sofas in front of open log fires, play the piano or have a game of backgammon.

Rooms hired in the castle itself are available on an exclusive-use basis – only your event will be held in the main castle on your chosen date, once the day visitors leave. Other venues around the estate can be used to expand your wedding including the Fairfax Hall, Terrace Room, Maiden’s Tower and Gatehouse.

Welcome to Leasowe Castle Hotel

Leasowe Castle offers a perfect combination of style, comfort and elegance in a tranquil setting with 6 acres of grounds overlooking Leasowe Golf Course and the sea.

The Castle dates back to 1592; it was built for Ferdinand 2nd Heir to the English throne, to allow him to watch horse racing on the Meols sands.

Weddings

Your wedding day is one of the most important days of your life and it is vital that arrangements leading up to and on the day itself are in capable and experienced hands.

We are dedicated to ensuring your arrangements run smoothly from the outset and that your wedding day is memorable. The team is led by Lindsay Hughes, our Wedding Co-Ordinator. Whether you would like a small intimate day or a huge party we have the perfect setting.

Our 6 acres of gardens surrounded by a traditional castle wall offers a superb location for special photographs.

Great Discounts are currently offered for Weddings falling in the months of January-May and October-December. Although these offers do not extend to Summer Weddings, we are pleased to be able to offer flexibility over the Summer in particular for Fridays in June/July. So, if you would rather have a late Wedding followed by some Drinks, Canapes and and Evening Buffet rather than have the formalities of a sit down Wedding Breakfast, then call the Sales Team on the number below to discuss your requirements. This is your big day and we will endeavour to be as flexible as possible when it comes to how you want your day to run and how many guests you want to have celebrating with you. Even if you just want an evening only function (for example you are getting married abroad and want to arrange a party on your return to celebrate with friends and family) then we may be able to help.

Merseyside Leasowe Castle Wedding

Wedding Breakfast Menus

For a full selection of menus please contact us for a wedding brochure, or download from main wedding page. In addition to our suggested menus, we would be pleased to create a menu to suit your own preferences.

Ceremonies

Civil Marriage Ceremony Guidelines

A Civil Ceremony is a non religious wedding Ceremony which can be personalised to suit your own individual requirements.

Leasowe Castle has three rooms licensed to hold Civil Ceremonies, the historic Star Chamber, whose ceiling, with bright gold stars was brought from the Court of Westminster along with four beautiful tapestries depicting the four seasons. This is suitable for up to 45 guests.

The Portcullis Restaurant, which is the second room licensed for ceremonies, will seat up to 90 guests.

The Ballroom, with a long aisle, suitable for up to 230 guests.

Music can play an important part in the Civil Ceremony and the Bride and Groom may organise background music to suit, whether it is a harpist, string quartet or music special to them. You may also wish to recite some special words.

When booking a civil ceremony at the hotel, you must notify Birkenhead Registry Office on 0151 666 3681 of your intention to marry at Leasowe Castle and make a reservation with the registrar. Provisional bookings can be made twelve months in advance and must be confirmed three months in advance of the wedding.

Merseyside Leasowe Castle Wedding Ceremony

Many rooms have beautiful views and the setting is tranquil.
Civil Weddings

Langley Castle has the appropriate licence to host Civil Marriages and has firmly established itself as one of the foremost venues for the celebration of marriages in the North East of England. This enables us to offer a truly complete Wedding Experience. Let us take the strain and responsibility, to leave you free to enjoy your day.

In 2006 the Chapel, in one of the top most turrets, was restored to its former glory and renamed the Cadwallader Bates Memorial Room. For small intimate parties the Cadwallader Bates Memorial Room will hold a maximum of 30 guests. It is a unique venue for services of Blessing, Renewal of Vows and Baby Naming Ceremonies.

Notes for guidance and conditions of Civil Marriages held at Langley Castle April 2009 – 31st March 2010

Couples seeking to be married at Langley Castle are still required to give Notice of Marriage to the Superintendent Registrar of the Registration District in which they live.

No confirmation of the reservation of the Marriage Room, for a Civil Marriage ceremony can be given, unless the local Superintendent Registrar has given an assurance that staff to conduct the ceremony will be available.
The Registration and Marriage Acts require that all Civil Marriages are celebrated by a Superintendent Registrar and registered by a Registrar of Marriages. The Marriage couple will be responsible for booking and for paying the fees for the attendance of these registration staff. Langley Castle will not be responsible for providing anyone to conduct a Civil Marriage ceremony.

Any readings, music or performance which forms part of the Civil Marriage Ceremony celebrated at Langley Castle are secular in nature (no religious content). For this purpose any reading or music, played by way of an introduction to, in any interval between parts of or as a conclusion, shall be treated as forming part of the ceremony.
No food or drink may be served or consumed in the room where the ceremony takes place, for one hour prior to the ceremony or during the ceremony itself.

Full access, for the general public, must be allowed, to any Civil Marriage which is solemnised at Langley Castle.
The arrangements and content for each Civil Marriage Ceremony, must meet with the approval of the Superintendent Registrar

The areas approved for the celebration of Civil Marriages at Langley Castle are The Drawing Room and the Josephine Restaurant. The number of persons attending Civil Marriages will determine the room that will be used. For numbers less than 40, the Marriage room will be the Drawing Room. Should the number of guests exceed 40, the Marriage room will be the Josephine Restaurant.

Ceremonies will be available in the Gazebo on the front lawn from April to September inclusive, weather permitting. The final decision as to wheather the Ceremony will take place in the Gazebo will be taken on the day, two hours prior to the Ceremony, by the Management of Langley Castle Hotel. If the weather is not kind on the day the Ceremony will then take place in either the Drawing Room or Josephine Restaurant.

The charge for a Civil Marriage at the Castle on either a Friday, Saturday or a Sunday is £850. On any other day of the week with the exception of Bank Holidays, the charge will be £495. These fees do not include the fees due to the Registrar.

The immediate bridal party will be present in the gazebo for the ceremony whilst the guests would be seated on the lawn.

On the occasion that the weather is not being kind on your day the ceremony would be moved inside to either the Drawing Room or the Josephine Restaurant depending upon the number of guests attending.
Grounds and Gardens

Herstmonceux is renowned for its magnificent moated castle, set in beautiful parkland and superb Elizabethan gardens. Built originally as a country home in the mid- 15th – century, Herstmonceux Castle embodies the history of Medieval England and the romance of Renaissance Europe.

Set among carefully maintained Elizabethan gardens and parkland, your enchantment begins with your first sight of the castle as it breaks into view.

Visitors are invited to walk around our beautiful Elizabethan walled gardens and the many woodland trails, leading to delightful discoveries such as our Rhododendron Gardens, Rose Garden and Herb Garden.

Take a slow stroll past the lily covered lakes to the 1930’s folly and admire the sheer magnificence of the castle.

Herstmonceux was a significant place long before the Castle was built. There is evidence of Roman remains, and in the 12th century a saxon lady, Idonea de Herst married a Norman nobleman, Ingelram de Monceux, to give the place it’s name. The name of the owners changed through marriage to Fiennes, and the family increased in wealth and power. James Fiennes distinguished himself fighting for King Henry V at the Battle of Agincourt and later became sheriff of Surrey and Sussex.

It was his elder brother, Sir Roger Fiennes, Treasurer of the Household of Henry V1, who started building the castle in 1441. This is one of the first major brick buildings (today it is the oldest brick building of any note still standing in England) and was years ahead of it’s time in other respects, with concentration more on grandeur and comfort than on defence.

The family fortunes are interesting and varied, but by 1700 the last Lord Dacre, Earl of Sussex, was forced to sell Herstmonceux Castle. By the end of this century the owner, Robert Hare had demolished most of it and used the bricks to refashion Herstmonceux Place, further up the hill.

It had deteriorated into a ruin until 1911 when it was bought by Lt. Col. Claude Lowther who used Local craftsmen to carry out the building work, and by 1912 most of the South front was rebuilt.

Col Lowther was responsible for much of the present design and for installing a number of pieces of fine woodwork and panelling purchased from other great historic houses in England.

After Col. Lowther’s death in 1929, Sir Paul Latham contributed very greatly to the construction of the castle both internally and externally. In 1946 he sold it to the Admiralty who bought the estate for the Royal Greenwich Observatory, and it became an important scientific institution for the next 40 years.

In 1993 Herstmonceux Castle was acquired by Queen’s University of Canada through the generosity of Drs Alfred and Isabel Bader, and is now an International Study Centre attracting students from around the world.

It was during a visit to their Sussex home that Drs Alfred and Isabel Bader chanced on an advertisement offering Herstmonceux Castle for sale, and their vision and support for the potential of the Castle taking on a new guise as an International Study Centre, bringing students from all over the world to study in the beauty and tranquillity of East Sussex countryside.

Enjoy a delicious cream tea in the Castle Tearoom and browse through interesting and unusual gifts in the castle shop. For those who wish to know more about the history of the castle, there is a Visitors Centre displaying various artefacts, photographs and information.

Also visitors are encouraged to take part in a guided tour of the interior of the castle to gain an insight into what life was like in times gone by and to become familiar with the stories and rumours which have circulated over the years, including those of smugglers and our resident ghosts.

Hedingham Castle’s Norman keep, 110 feet high, was built c.1140 by Aubrey de Vere and is still owned by one of his descendants, Jason Lindsay and his wife Demetra. There are four floors to explore, including a magnificent Banqueting Hall spanned by a remarkable 28 foot arch, one of the largest Norman arches in England. A good view of this splendid room can be obtained from the Minstrels’ Gallery, built within the thickness of the 12 foot walls.

A visit to the castle and its beautiful grounds is ideal for a family outing, and during the summer there are a variety of special events which bring its colourful history alive. Come and enjoy one of our exciting Jousting Tournaments or other entertainments.

Castle weddings in medieval surroundings. For those wishing to get married in a Castle, it is now possible to have a romantic candlelit Civil Ceremony in the Banqueting Hall.

Small receptions can be held in the elegant rooms of the Georgian house which is a beautiful location for Wedding Receptions and is also perfect for delightful, intimate Winter Weddings. For larger parties or those requiring dancing, there is a marquee on the private Tulip Lawn. Drinks can be served on the terrace which has beautiful views over the lake.

Castle weddings, civil ceremonies in medieval surroundings

Imagine getting married in a wonderful old castle where once the Earls of Oxford entertained King Henry VIII and Queen Elizabeth I. The ceremony takes place by candle-light in the magnificent Banqueting Hall where one hundred guests can be seated and a further thirty may watch from the Minstrels’ Gallery above. You can have a traditional modern ceremony or choose a medieval theme with authentic costumes and strolling minstrels. The beautiful grounds offer ideal opportunities for photographs.

The castle, which is now closed to the public on wedding days, is privately owned by the Honourable Thomas Lindsay, youngest son of the 28th Earl of Crawford and Balcarres, and his wife Virginia.

The Georgian house may be hired as an elegant location for large or small parties and, during the summer, your champagne reception can be served on the terrace of the peaceful garden overlooking the lake. After this, you and your guests can enjoy your Wedding Breakfast in our lined marquee on the private Tulip Lawn. You will enjoy use of the house and grounds throughout. Our wedding coordinators will be on hand to help you with your plans and to make sure that everything runs smoothly on the day.

The ground floor entrance hall leads to the drawing room with its large bay window, the dining room, and the cloakroom with luxurious shower. This also leads to the well equipped kitchen and boot area.

The staircase leads to the master bedroom, a twin bedroom and smaller double bedroom. Also on this floor is the main bathroom, with a double-ended bath. The garden has two terraces and garden furniture.

The GARDEN COTTAGE is within the castle park and is a 2 minute walk to the Castle and Village.

Hedingham Castle’s gardens and restoration of the grounds

The Castle and Queen Anne house are positioned on the massive defensive earthworks. They overlook beautiful wooded grounds, parkland and gardens but as you pass through the valley walk, the steep slopes of the Motte can tower 40ft above. In 1719, when the house was built, formal gardens were created. Adam Holt, the garden designer better known for his work at Wanstead Park, transformed the principle Southern view from the house by softening the defensive slopes, allowing for an uninterrupted view of the formal lake, formed into a octagon and canal from some of the Norman fish ponds. Many fine specimen trees were planted, aswell as many varieties of snowdrops, in drifts around the valley walk. The Bog Garden was created in the 1920’s around the 18th century dovecote.

During the 20th century the whole world of the English country house changed and at Hedingham this had a huge effect on the garden. As the farms were sold off, the house was left with no income to maintain the beautiful landscape, and the surrounding parkland and woods reverted to an overgrown wilderness.

During 2009 the gardens have undergone a wonderful transformation. Hedingham was approached by Red House TV on behalf of Channel 4, to begin the restoration and feature in a programme called ‘Landscape Man’, due to be aired in spring 2010. For many years the priorities have been to restore the house and castle and so with little budget available, we tried obtain sponsorship and see what could be achieved in the time available. The final results have been phenomenal, far exceeding our wildest expectations.
