Welcome to Palazzo Parisio

This magnificent Palace with its beautiful surrounding gardens has been my family’s home since the middle of the 19th century, when it was acquired from the Parisio family by my great grandfather the Marquis Giuseppe Scicluna. It was he who enriched it with great style and opulence – turning it into the great stately home that it now is – and one of the premier heritage attractions in Malta.

We are open to the public all year round and greatly enjoy welcoming visitors – as individuals or in groups, from all over the world. The Palace and gardens also make a fabulous venue for exclusive corporate hospitality events, incentives, weddings and private parties. Our popular daytime restaurant Caffé Luna is now open on selected evenings under the new title ‘Luna di Sera’ together with the ‘Luna Lounge Cocktail Bar’. My own company, under my personal supervision has exclusive rights for all onsite catering.

Restoration and conservation continue to be a heavy and ongoing responsibility and we depend solely on the revenue raised by these commercial activities to ensure the future survival of this great historic house.

I do hope that the information on this website will inspire you to visit us soon. You will be warmly welcomed.

Weddings

PALAZZO PARISIO – where Fairytale Weddings come true

Palazzo Parisio reigns supreme in Malta as a venue for the most romantic of weddings – offering a stunning backdrop for exotic wedding receptions or civil weddings – combining romance, style, exclusivity and excellence. There is nothing quite like it on the island and it is also one of the largest venues, catering for up to 1000 guests.

An Historic Venue: When you choose Palazzo Parisio for your wedding or wedding reception, you will have total exclusivity. That means that you will have sole use of the Palace and its magnificent gardens for you, your family and guests. Choose from the grandeur of the ornate 24-carat gilded and mirrored Ballroom or some of the surrounding historic rooms, to the beauty of the classic baroque gardens, which provide the perfect location for summer weddings. You’ll be spoilt for choice with romantic backdrops for those all-important wedding photos!

Palazzo Parisio Wedding

Civil Weddings

Though church ceremonies remain firm favourites in Malta, civil ceremonies are on the increase both with local couples and also with an ever-increasing number of foreign visitors who wish to combine the exchange of vows with a honeymoon.

Possibilities for civil weddings at the Palace are endless – whether one opts for a simple ceremony in the gilded Ballroom or on the upstairs open air terrace, followed perhaps by Champagne and canapes, or a full-blown Buffet or silver service Gala Dinner for friends and family in the gorgeous Palace gardens, this fairytale venue remains exclusively yours for the evening. You may therefore utilise any area of the Palace, including the lavishly decorated Ballroom, the elegant Sala Lombarda or the lovely gardens for those all-important photos.

Venue Hire Fees are charged for the exclusive use of Palazzo Parisio and Gardens outside public (excluding Luna di Sera, the Luna Lounge & Cellars). Rates are available on request and will vary according to number of guests and whether the function is on a weekday or weekend.

Wedding Receptions & Gala Dinners

Our international team of chefs are on hand to create and prepare menus of your choice to the very highest standards. Our Wedding Reception Menu Pack features a selection of hot and cold Finger Food Menus for Stand up Receptions and a great choice of Buffet Tables. Alternatively, we can offer a variety of 3, 4 or 5 course Gala Dinner menus.

Prices, charged on a per person basis, are available on request and there is a minimum menu charge for events with 25 guests and below.

All gala dinner menus are inclusive of a welcome cocktail/mixed juices with dry snacks, bakery basket, half a bottle of Palazzo Parisio white or red wine (or equivalent), half a bottle of mineral water, coffee and petits fours.

The property is ideal for the larger family holiday with friends. It can also be an exclusive venue for that special wedding in our own private chapel with a reception al fresco afterwards in the Moorish gardens.

The main house and annex cottage can accommodate up to 24 persons.

Palacete de Cázulas Wedding

The Chapel

The chapel was constructed around 1890 by the De Castro family, owners of the Palacete de Cázulas and its surrounding estate since the 16th century. It’s last surviving member, the Marquesa de Montenaro y Barcinas, dedicated the chapel to the Virgin of Lourdes after a pilgrimage to Lourdes cured her of cancer. She also built a small grotto beside the chapel which contains a statue of the saint.

During the Spanish Civil War (1936-9), the chapel was ransacked by republican supporters and its statue of Jesus which had been hidden in a roof, was found and burnt in the courtyard. After the war, the Marquesa returned to Cázulas and refurbished the chapel with religious artefacts from her home in Madrid, and the building resumed its role as religious centre of the estate, used for weddings, baptisms and daily services.

When the Marquesa died in 1972, the property passed into the hands of the Opus Dei and the chapel fell into disuse. In 1988 the whole estate was transferred to a local co-operative of owners/workers and, a short while later, the house, chapel and gardens were sold into private hands where they’ve stayed ever since.

Over the last few years the chapel has been fully restored to its former glory. A delightful statue of the Virgin of Lourdes presides over the altar which is more than two centuries old. Carved and colourful saints look down from the walls and the original plain marble font stands beside the entrance. The chapel’s lofty vaulted roof and high windows provide the correct subtle lighting and atmosphere for an intimate ceremony.

Power outlets are available for extra photographic lighting or taped music.

Palacete de Cázulas Chapel

The Courtyard Cottage

Recently refurbished rustic cottage with new kitchen, modern bathrooms, electric heating and open log fire.

The building leads off a shared courtyard and has superb valley views to the West.

Ground Floor

A small vine covered terrace leading to the front door, entrance hall, full equipped rustic style kitchen with dishwasher, washing machine and fridge freezer, bathroom and W.C., sitting room with fireplace and French windows opening onto West facing terrace with panoramic views over a totally unspoiled valley.

First Floor

Two twin bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms, landing/study area with stairs leading to storage area in attic. One bedroom overlooks the courtyard, the other has views over the valley.

Palacete de Cázulas Cottage

The Gardens

The ornamental Moorish gardens have been laboriously restored to their former glory offering guests the opportunity to wander or relax in total peace and tranquility. Surrounded by centuries old palm trees, shady borders and colourful exotic plants. Ancient cypress hedges border an attractive swimming pool that is fed by a natural spring.

Optional pool heating is now available by separate arrangement (usually only necessary from November through to April).

Hard surface tennis court is located adjacent to the summer bar and terrace.

There are several large terraces available. The main terrace with magnificent views over the valley and the village of Otivar has a seating capacity of up to 110 persons and is used mostly in the summer as a superb sun bathing area.

SITTING in a rocky hill

high above the white village of Monda, el Castillo de Monda has witnessed centuries of history. Dating from the Phoenicians, Roman times, it was the Arabic invaders who built the fortress and village here. Evidence is all around.

The actual hotel is built on towers and walls of the Arabic fortress. It is an important strategic position commanding the Guadalhorce Valley to the bay of Málaga with the Sierra Nevada visible in the distance. History lingers in the Castillo’s nooks and crannies.

MONDA was (according to various historians) the site of the battle of “Munda”on 17th March, 45 BC between the armies of Julius Caesar and the son of Pompey, Gnaeus, for control of Spain and the little known world.

At the end of until 9th century Omar Ben Hafsun rebuilt and fortified El Castillo as part of his campaign against the power of Cordoba. Over the years the castle was attacked and then rebuilt until it was finally destroyed by Saib-Ibn Al-Mundir in the year 308 of the hegemony (year 932 in Christian era). From the 11th century el Castillo was rebuilt by the Hammadies and we know that in 13th century Monda was an important fortification.

Between spring and summer of 1485, Hurtado de Luna, the catholic King’s captain, took Monda with the title: Alcalde of Monda. Monda was then assigned to the jurisdiction of Malaga, to reduce the influence of Seville. The muslim population was allowed to stay in the Castillo / village but after an uprising in the Serranía of Ronda and the Marbella areas, they were ordered to convert to christianity. In 1508 King Fernando granted the “señorío“ of Tolox and Monda to the Marquis of Villena and Duke of Escallona, Diego López Pacheco.

On 19th March, 1570, the remaining Moorish population in Andalusia was expelled. Arévalo de Zuazo was in charge of the expulsion in Monda. The population was replaced by 80 christians selected by the Marquis of Villena. They were given the belongings of the expelled moors and moved downhill to begin the village if Monda in it’s present site.

Then … in the 20th century, in 1996 the Castillo was converted into the Hotel El Castillo de Monda.

The Norman invasion of 1066 did more to bring castles to England than any other event. When the Duke of Normandy defeated English forces he was crowned William I, the King of England. One of the weapons William used was the castle. He brought portable wooden fortifications with him from France when he invaded. These provided simple protection until stone fortifications could be erected.

Early English castles exploited the landscape, using hills as the center of the stronghold whenever possible. Called “motte and bailey” castles, their wooden palisade fences rarely provided adequate protection, and other defensive measures were soon added to castles.

One of the first castles William built was the White Tower, a fortification so large that it inspired fear in the inhabitants. This tower would evolve to become the Tower of London, one of the most famous castles in history. Land for most English castles was granted by the king in return for sworn allegiance to the throne. The castle was the centerpiece of medieval English society, and peasants looked to these fortifications for protection in time of war. Stone castles were erected to provide stability and to symbolize the lord’s power in his kingdom.

Many English castles were damaged or destroyed completely during the Civil Wars of the 1600s. Cromwellian forces, using gunpowder and artillery, destroyed centuries of medieval architecture in their attempt to erase royal influences from the landscape.

Weddings in Castles

Few images equal the wonder of a fairy-tale wedding in a medieval castle. A princess wearing her finest blue garments…a noble knight in his shiniest armor…the lord and his lady presiding from a table of honor…and the entire village attending to witness the glorious event. Medieval weddings in castles included these scenes, but they were much more complex. Marriage in the Middle Ages meant sharing a lord’s property or a noble name.

Love wasn’t often an issue when it came to medieval marriages, but it did occur. Quite often the most important goal of marriage among nobles was continued success and the further acquisition of wealth. Arranged marriages within the noble class would be decided when the future couple was very young-often when the bride and groom were only 10 or 11 years old. Many of these future spouses would not meet for five to six years, on their wedding day.

Marriages may have taken place elsewhere, such as a church or in a peaceful garden, but the wedding party would return to the castle to feast and celebrate for hours-even days.

Ceremonies

A medieval wedding day would be a celebration for the entire village. Minstrels, jugglers and other entertainers would entertain throngs of well-wishers. The celebratory spirit would infect everyone in the manor—the castle lord may have even freed prisoners on this day. Any leftover food would soon be packed away by beggars who would gather at the gates.

The Middle Age feudal system meant that wedding celebrations in a castle fairly common. The Catholic Church often allowed ceremonies to take place outside the confines of church walls, just as long as the couple later had a priest bless the union.

Many medieval wedding ceremonies were held in the open air, but the couple were then required to go to the Church door to have clergy bless the union before the wedding party returned to the castle for a marriage feast. Rings or other precious tokens were exchanged between the bride and groom, and each would say their vows. As the wedding party traveled through the streets on the way to castle, villagers showered the couple with grains of wheat or other seeds to wish them a large family in the future.

Feast

You’ve heard of the expression, “Food fit for a King.” Medieval wedding feasts featured more food than most of the villagers would see for months. Wedding feasts celebrated the day no matter the social class of the bride and groom.

While choices were sometimes limited by climate and availability of food, some of the medieval menus may have included fowl, such as geese, capons, geese, chicken and quail. Celebrants would also dine on meats such as beef, lamb, and pork, while those living near bodies of water may have feasted on herring, salmon, eels and fresh water fish. Nobles and wealthier wedding parties pay the premium for large quantities of milled flour and grain-based meals. Cheese, butter and other dairy products could be seen on the wedding feast table.

Guests may have feasted on other dishes like oysters steamed in almond milk, spicy mulled wine, stewed cabbage, and tarts and custards. Society at a medieval feast rarely used utensils and would eat with their fingers. The party lasted all night, and since little food could be preserved, no one wanted to leave until all the food had been eaten.

While the castle lord, his family, and selected guests of honor sat at a table on a dais, the other wedding celebrants dined while seated at long tables in the castle’s Great Hall.

Traditions

Weddings during medieval times gave birth to many traditions that today’s brides still follow.

Betrothal was an important medieval tradition. The prospective bride and groom appeared in front of a priest and made solemn promises. They then exchanged rings and kisses, then waited for roughly 40 days, when the wedding ceremony then took place. Grooms were required to pay a “deposit” at the betrothal, and should he try to back out of an agreement, he would have to pay a penalty. This was equal to four times the betrothal price.

Medieval brides often wore blue, the traditional color of purity, rather than today’s white dress.

The traditional Maid of Honor began in England where the senior of the bridesmaids attended to the bride’s every need the week or so before her wedding day. She was also responsible for creating the bouquet and other wedding decorations. On the wedding day she would help the bride dress.

During the feast, the bride and groom drank spiced wine from a fine chalice called the Wedding Cup. As midnight approached, guests tried to get into the newlywed’s bedchamber to bring them a reinvigorating potion called “Bride’s Broth”.

Knights returning from the Crusades introduced medieval society to the tradition of a bridal veil. The veil was another symbol of purity and was also believed to protect the bride from “the evil eye.”

Garters became an important part of a medieval bride’s wardrobe. As the couple hurried to their room, wedding guests followed and tried to grab the garter for good luck. Before this tradition, overzealous wedding guests often shredded the bride’s clothing trying to grab a handful of lucky cloth. Tradition held that any man who gave his love a bride’s garter would be guaranteed faithfulness.

Flowers were also important in a medieval wedding. Returning crusaders introduced medieval Europe to a Saracen tradition of weaving a crown out of orange blossoms. Only nobles could afford these very expensive blossoms.

The Great Hall

Medieval feasts, wedding celebrations, receiving visiting nobles, and holiday festivities would all be celebrated in the castle’s great hall. Elaborate tapestries and silks would line the walls and while Middle Age castles could be rather dark, the largest windows would be found here. Small wooden or stone benches were placed underneath these windows so guests could enjoy the view.

Great Hall furnishings could be sparse, but they were very practical. Long wooden tables and benches would be covered with white linene during feasts, but could be taken apart easily for dancing and entertainment. Castle lords and their families would be seated at a table on a raised wooden or stone dais at the far end of the hall.

Stone floors in the castle’s Great Hall were rarely covered with carpets, though wealthy lords might cover them with tapestries. Straw and rushes were the usual coverings, but later in the Middle Ages herbs like majoram, camomile, basil, sweet fennel, mint, germander and lavender would be added to help with the aroma. These coverings were swept regularly, but new materials would be soon added to cover up the more nasty fragments on the floor: bone fragments, spittle, animal excrement, beer and grease.

Light for evening feasts and celebrations would be provided by candles and oil lamps. It was not unusual for guests to sleep in the hall after a night of merrymaking.

Castle Kitchens

Medieval kitchens were placed outside the Great Hall to fire safety. Spits roasting meat and large, iron cauldrons bubbling with soups and stews were all part of the kitchen’s daily routine. Lambs, cattle, pigs, and fowl were tethered or penned nearby, some castles kept a pond stocked with fish, and cooking herbs would be grown in nearby gardens. Castle kitchens could be large enough to roast up to three whole oxen at a time!

Water would be supplied by a well, but castles during the later Middle Ages began to pipe water right into the kithcen area. Utensils and whatever dishes the lord might possess would be washed in large stone sinks.

Breakfast in the Middle Ages was usually a simple meal of bread and water. Dinner would be served between 10 a.m. and noon and feature several courses. Dinner, especially for celebratory feasts, would demand large quantities of food be prepared. At the marriage of Henry III’s daughter, sixty cattle were slaughtered and prepared as the main course for the meal.

Castell d’Emporda

Castle hotel Castell d’Empordà is an architectural jewel that was built eight centuries ago. The castle previously belonged to Pere Margarit, a captain who served under Columbus and who was himself the discoverer of Magarita Island.

When Albert Diks and Margo Vereijken saw this national monument, they realized that they had found the perfect place to transform their dreams into reality: a medieval castle, located in a region whose beauty is comparable to that of Tuscany or Provence, just minutes from the Mediterranean Sea and beautiful beaches. It was then that they decided to buy and restore the castle, finally transforming it into the magnificent castle hotel that it is today. Now the 12 hectare estate contains castle accommodation offering 38 high standard rooms and a fantastic restaurant, and is surrounded by a hundred-year-old forest and a splendid olive orchard for our guests’ exclusive enjoyment.

The castle hotel Castell D’Empordà lies in Girona, a beautiful city in Northern Catalonia strategically connected to almost all major European airports. A flight to Girona from other regions of Europe takes a maximum of two hours.

Once at the airport, it will take you half an hour to reach Empordà, a charming rural area that serves as the incomparable setting for a unique castle hotel with wonderful castle accommodation: Castell d’Empordà. A warm welcome and an unforgettable stay await you in this romantic getaway. Whatever the purpose of your visit, a special weekend getaway or a rural tourism holiday, Castell d’Empordà is the ideal place to transform your trip into a special occasion.

Have you ever fallen in love with a place? This is what happened to Margo Vereijken and Albert Diks, when they found themselves face to face with the ruins of the 800 year old Castell d’Empordà.

After a 3 year restoration, Castell d’Empordà is now a unique castle hotel where you can enjoy the beautiful things of life.

A castle hotel like no other, stylish but casual.

Castle Rooms

Located in the original areas of the castle. The medieval castle rooms include all of the comforts required of a high standard luxury hotel room, combined with the charm of a medieval castle. The decoration incorporates the stone walls very well: curtains made from Indian silk; comfortable cushions; hand-made tiles brought from Marrakech; contrasting colours that evoke nature, night and day … And finally, a view of the Empordàn countryside transports us to an idyllic dreamscape. Your stay in one of our medieval castle rooms at Castell d’Emporda will be, without a doubt, unforgettable.

Garden Rooms

This spectacular new building was constructed in the eastern part of the castle’s mountain, near the pool and with a Rooftop Garden. Every garden room has old oak floors, silk curtains and furniture from China and Italy. These romantic rooms at our luxury hotel also have private balconies from which you will be able to contemplate the beautiful sunsets of Empordà. The only exception is room 16 and 13, which does not have a balcony.

Suite Pere Margarit

This 80 square metre romantic room was the master bedchamber of the medieval castle. After studying the life and travels of Captain Pere Margarit, the famous designer Menno Kroon has created a majestic ambiance without sacrificing the high standards of luxury accommodation. Objects which originally belonged to the Margarit family, such as Tibetan rugs, stones brought from India, stained glass windows draped with silk curtains and a Victorian bathtub were used to decorate the suite.

Tower Rooms

Located in the castle’s tower, these rooms have the most spectacular view. Decorated in an intimate fashion, these rooms are the ideal option for couples who wish to spend a romantic weekend getaway. We must mention that due to limited space, these rooms only have a shower, without subtracting any of the other services that we provide in the other rooms in the castle hotel. These rooms are not advisable for the elderly, as they are only accessible via a rather long staircase.

Garden Suites

The Garden Suites are a new option at the hotel Castell d’Empordà that will surprise our guests. In order to do so, we have counted on the help of one of the best interior decorators in Spain: Cristina Gabas.

The contemporary design, along with classic references, incorporates well into the landscape. Light colours with medieval reminiscences and natural materials, such as ancient oak, teakwood and unfinished stone evoke a natural setting.

The rooms are spacious at 58 square metres and are formed by two areas: the sleeping area and a sitting area. Both the bathroom and the bedroom have balconies with spectacular views of the fields of Empordà.

Services: Plasma TVs, stereo, DVD, CD, safe, minibar, telephone.

Restaurant

Enjoy the most exquisite meals in a perfect ambience. Our Restaurant is a meeting point for hotel guests and connoisseurs of good food from the area.

Every day our guests can enjoy breakfast; lunch, simple afternoon snacks by the pool, or a romantic dinner at Castell d’Empordà.

The ambience in the restaurant, the castle’s old wine cellar, which is today a bar, and the terraces, invite you to relax, enjoy the views, the sunset, feel the gentle Mediterranean breeze…

Let the atmosphere captivate you.

Castell d'Emporda Restaurant

Kitchen

The press has recognized Castell d’Empordà as a reference point in local gastronomy, noting that the hotel stands among restaurants in Girona out not only due to its tranquillity, spaciousness, luxury and comfort, but additionally due to its exquisite cuisine.

Our chefs, Joost Ruiten & Abel Cardozo, will delight you with special dishes created with the freshest ingredients available.

Our kitchen is the heart of the hotel. Each dish reverberates with the feeling of the castle: the delicious Mediterranean cuisine that grows in our kitchen garden or that is brought each day from neighbouring farms and nearby fishing ports.

On 2007 our restaurant appears as recommended in the Michelin Guide.

Bar

Located in the old wine cellar of the medieval castle and tastefully decorated, the hotel bar is the perfect place to relax while you enjoy a glass of wine or your favourite cocktail, all the while enjoying a restful atmosphere.
