Truly Individual… Truly Magical… An Extraordinary Romantic & Historic Hotel

…you need look no further than Ruthin Castle (the “Red Fort”), which dates from before 1277 and dominates the historic Welsh market town of Ruthin, close to Chester, Llangollen and within easy reach of the North Wales Coast, Snowdonia and picturesque Betws-y-Coed. The castle previously formed part of the Crown Estate until sold by Charles I in 1632 and sits in its ancient walled dry moat within acres of private landscaped gardens, parkland and woods alongside the River Clwyd.

The perfect romantic setting to give your Princess or Prince a fairytale castle break. The magical stone walls of Ruthin Castle have provided the intimacy for Royalty and High Society of the past to enjoy dangerous romantic affairs and for romantic intrigue that once caused sensation and scandal in the Government…

For long and short holiday leisure breaks, Ruthin Castle is a very special place to stay and is the ideal base from which to explore the beautiful North Wales countryside, coast, towns and villages, and the historic walled City of Chester with its shopping, sightseeing and restaurants. Pamper yourself with fine dining, massages, aromatherapy and beauty treatments or exercise in the gym, play golf on the associated Ruthin-Pwllglas course or play snooker on the table presented to the Castle by the Prince of Wales in 1875.

Weddings

Every Princess deserves a fairytale castle wedding and Ruthin Castle provides a truly outstanding and secluded wedding setting in 30 acres of landscaped gardens, parkland and woods. A multitude of picture-perfect photographic opportunities exist within the castle itself or using the castle exterior as a backdrop or in the gardens around the castle… the rose garden, the terrace garden, the old mediaeval walled garden walkway and the Italian garden… and lots more!!

The Cornwallis Lounge, Peacock Room, King Charles Room and Grand Salon are all licensed for Civil Wedding Ceremonies and provide a variety of sizes and styles that is unique to Ruthin Castle. Please note that a Civil Ceremony can only be booked in conjunction with a full Wedding Reception at Ruthin Castle.

Ruthin Castle Wedding

Wedding Receptions in North Wales

For Wedding Receptions we can also offer a choice of wonderful rooms to suit the occasion – from the massive, sparkling, crystal chandelier and glittering mirrors of the Grand Salon which opens onto the Terrace Garden, to the less formal but charming Peacock Room which opens onto the Rose Garden, or a fun, themed costume wedding in the Mediaeval Banquet Hall which adjoins the Italian Garden and mediaeval walled garden. We can provide a setting for the smallest, most intimate wedding or for a maximum of around 140 within the hotel but the grounds also allow the option of a marquee to accommodate up to 500 guests or simply to capture the outdoor feeling of Spring or Summer. It is one of the most secluded wedding venues in North Wales and can also be booked for exclusive use.

Accommodation

A warm and friendly welcome awaits…
The pink marble monumental lions reclining proudly on their plinths and the red welcoming carpet at the entrance immediately let you know that Ruthin Castle is a special hotel, but special in a friendly, comfortable way rather than being grand, formal and intimidating.

The wood panelled entrance hall is warmly lit and several of the inner rooms have the added warmth of beautifully carved stone and wood fireplaces with open fires that make them cosy despite their scale

Original oil paintings line the Inner Hallway and are to be found in several of the public rooms.

The castle has a proud, centuries-old tradition of providing hospitality and comfort including hosting numerous Royal guests. It is difficult not just to feel welcome but also to feel part of the great history of the castle and those that have come before – see our Royal Heritage page for more information about the history of Ruthin Castle.

Ruthin Castle Accommodation

The Guest Bedrooms

Many of the 62 bedrooms have been refurbished to a very high standard and are available as deluxe twins/doubles. An even higher standard is available in the Royal Salons (such as ‘Jennie’ pictured) and the Prince of Wales (pictured).

Each of these designer rooms has its own individual personality.

Most rooms whether refurbished or not, enjoy views over the 30 acres of gardens, parkland and woods of the estate and towards the surrounding Welsh mountains (at times snow-capped in Winter). All bedrooms are within the main buildings and upper floors are served by lift.

All rooms have fully en-suite bath or shower rooms, offer room service and have:

•hairdryer, bath and/or shower
•remote control colour television
•radio
•hospitality beverages
•direct dial telephones with data port.
•
Many rooms have four-poster beds and original fireplaces (currently not in use) and many have original antique pieces of furniture. A small number of family rooms and suites are available.

Restaurants and Bars

Ruthin Castle offers a choice of setting for a relaxing drink before and after dining, all of which have cosy open fires and decorative ribbed ceilings… the Library Bar with its Welsh Oak wood-panelled octagonal walls and heavy leather seating or the Inner Hall with its impressive oil paintings or the Cornwallis Lounge with its soft sofas and easy chairs (the latter two offer lounge service).

Bertie’s Dining Room has won awards from the AA and RAC and features fresh regional produce creatively used in a modern British style. The dining room features windows overlooking the lawn of the garden terrace and is suited to everything from romantic dinners to small business meetings or celebration dinner parties. Due to the popularity of the dining room we strongly recommend booking in advance.

Penrice Castle and its surrounding Estate lie in the heart of the Gower Peninsula in South Wales. The Estate offers holiday accommodation in fifteen self catering Gower holiday cottages overlooking Oxwich beach. Visitors have access to the historic park and gardens at Penrice and free entry to nearby Oxwich car park owned by the Estate. Events and weddings available on the Estate by arrangement. Gower was the first Area of Oustanding National Beauty in Britain and is ideal for walking, bird watching, boating, golf, watersports, horse riding and fishing. Short breaks are available out of season.

Weddings

Penrice Castle Park, the setting of our marquee receptions, is one of the most beautiful wedding locations in Gower. The marquee overlooks the old Norman Penrice Castle and the sea. There are also lovely gardens and a lake which both make an ideal backdrop for wedding photographs. Weddings can be booked between May and September and we are currently taking bookings for 2010.

Our holiday cottages are available for wedding guests. The Towers, which is the lodge to Penrice Castle, is going to be available to hire from 2009 and will make an ideal honeymoon location. It has a round bedroom and sitting room.

There is a small church in Penrice village where several couples have had their service and which is within walking distance of the marquee site.

We have found that it is easier to rent just the site and leave the rest for couples to decide and arrange. We provide a list of recommended suppliers and caterers.

For smaller weddings, we offer marquee weddings on Oxwich Beach voted the “Best Beach in Britain” in 2007 by The Travel Magazine. Alternatively receptions for less than 50 people can be held at some of our cottages.

Prices start from £500 plus vat for use of a site at one of the cottages or on Oxwich Beach. Marquee receptions in Penrice Park are £1000 plus vat. A deposit of one third of the cost is payable on booking and the balance is then payable eight weeks before your wedding day.

This cost is for the marquee site and the use of the Park & Gardens at Penrice Castle for photography.

Please contact us for more details or to make an appointment to view the grounds.

Garden House

A lovely detached house set in Penrice Park with its own enclosed garden. This was originally the Head Gardener’s house. The old walled kitchen gardens and pleasure gardens lie behind.

There is a large fully equipped kitchen with dishwasher, washer/drier, microwave, larder fridge and separate freezer. The other end of the kitchen is a dining area with a big table and an open fire. The sitting room is pretty and comfortable with an open fire, television and video. There is also a hall with large dresser and a downstairs shower room.

Welcome to Picton Castle

Picton Castle has been the historic home of the Philipps’ family who are direct descendents of Sir John Wogan who built the Castle over 850 years ago.

Picton Castle is open all year round for weddings and corporate events and during the summer there are guided tours of the Castle which still retains much of its original character.

The 40 acres of gardens are open to the public. Part of the Royal Horticultural Society Regional Garden Scheme they are home to a feast of Rhododendrons, Embothrium and Eucryphia.

The Woodland Gardens burst with colour during the spring with blankets of wild flowers blended with beautiful shrubs from all corners of the world. In the summer the restored walled garden with its enchanting fountain and fernery is a haven of tranquillity.

The art gallery is host to a variety of artist exhibitions and the events schedule is a popular feature of the Picton Castle calendar with garden lectures, open air theatre and family days being just some of the fun events on offer.

Weddings at Picton Castle

Picton Castle provides the perfect setting for a fairy tale wedding day with its fine entrance gates and long carriage drive sweeping up to the Castle forecourt. Set in 40 acres of stunning woodland gardens there is a beautifully restored walled garden and fountain, providing an enchanting atmosphere for your special day.

Wedding receptions are held in a marquee adjacent to the Castle, overlooking the gardens and the Walled Garden and Castle forecourt are available for champagne receptions.

Civil wedding ceremonies take place in the Great Hall or more intimate ceremonies can occasionally be conducted in the Library.

For your own wedding pack download here (pdf). Call us and we would be delighted to show you around and discuss the details of your celebration.

Picton Castle Wedding

Picton Castle Gardens

Situated close to the Cleddau Estuary, known locally as the ‘hidden waterway’, Picton Castle comprises 40 acres of some of the most beautiful woodland gardens and grounds in West Wales.

Soak up the special magic as you stroll beneath some of the largest and oldest trees in West Wales and discover woodland walks, ferns, a maze and abundant feasts of wild flowers that blend with unusual woodland shrubs from all corners of the world. Unique to Picton are the Rhododendrons raised over the years by our own head gardeners and include rare species including Myrtles, Embrothium and Eucryphia.

The Walled Garden is an enchanting riot of colour in the summer months with its elegant fountain, rose strewn arches and medicinal herbs all labelled with their remedies. Seek out the door that leads to the fernery, a tranquil and fascinating habitat for less hardy fern species.

Corporate Events at Picton Castle

Picton Castle is one of the most unusual and impressive locations in West Wales for a corporate event whether a small informal meeting, high level product launch or dining reception.

The Conference Centre which is open year round is located in the Castle Courtyard and benefits from a brand new suite of dedicated conference rooms developed in 2006 to offer light airy adaptable meeting space and breakout areas to complement The Lecture Theatre, Picton Room and Picton Gallery, which have disabled access and ample parking.

Gwydir Castle is situated in the beautiful Conwy Valley and is set within a Grade 1 listed, 10-acre garden. Built by the illustrious Wynn family c1500, Gwydir is a fine example of a Tudor courtyard house, incorporating re-used medieval material from the dissolved Abbey of Maenan. Further additions date from c1600 and c1826. The important 1640s panelled Dining Room has now been reinstated, following its repatriation from the New York Metropolitan Museum.

Wedding

The Castle is an approved premises for Civil Marriages and our two early Tudor ground-floor halls are available for your ceremony and reception.
Bed & Breakfast at Gwydir Castle

Gwydir Castle is a Grade 1 listed early Tudor courtyard house, set in ten acres of important historic gardens and located in the centre of the enchanting Conwy Valley. The ancestral seat of the illustrious Wynn family, Gwydir was the home, in the Elizabethan period, of Katherine Tudor, ‘Mam Cymru’, the ‘Mother of Wales’ and cousin of Queen Elizabeth I. Amongst the many notable guests who have stayed at Gwydir are King Charles I, Lord Leicester (Queen Elizabeth’s favourite) and more recently King George V and Queen Mary.

The castle is primarily a family home, though Guests are warmly welcomed to share in Gwydir’s tranquil and timeless atmosphere and languish by a log fire in one of the candle-lit halls. The castle is renowned for its peacocks and for its ghosts (though neither the former nor the latter inhabit the guest’s rooms). Situated in the foot-hills of Snowdon, three miles from Betws-y-Coed and twelve miles from the medieval walled town of Conwy, Gwydir is perfectly situated for the enjoyment of all the natural and historic wonders of North Wales.

The castle is within pleasant walking distance of the market town of Llanrwst, with convenient rail and bus connections. There are also several good restaurants and inns in the vicinity for dinner.

Two rooms are available, the ‘King’s Room,’ with its en-suite bathroom, and the ‘Duke of Beaufort’s Chamber,’ with its own private bathroom adjacent. Both rooms have four-poster beds, overlooking the gardens. The bedrooms are furnished with antiques and, whilst retaining their historic charm, have all the (discreet) concessions to comfort and modernity that the gentle traveller might require.

Cardiff Castle is one of Wales’ leading heritage attractions and a site of international significance. During 2000 years of history, the Castle has been a Roman Garrison, a Norman stronghold and in Victorian times was transformed into a gothic fairytale fantasy.

Cardiff Castle and its Parklands

Just a short walk from Cardiff Castle and the city centre is Bute Park, an extensive area of mature parkland, flanked by the River Taff, Sophia Gardens, Pontcanna Fields and the castle. Few places can boast such a spacious green area in the heart of their city – a very popular ‘green lung’ full of historic and wildlife interest. Containing a stunning, nationally significant arboretum with 50 UK ‘Champion Trees’, Bute Park attracts over 1,000,000 visits a year and plays a vital role in the city’s events calendar – the RHS Show Cardiff is just one of such flagship events.

Bute Park and Cardiff Castle share a common history, and have played significant roles in the development of the city from Roman and medieval times, through the industrial revolution, up until the modern city of Cardiff we know today. From 1873, the southern section was laid out by Andrew Pettigrew for the Bute family as Cardiff Castle’s private pleasure grounds. In 1947 the 5th Marquess of Bute handed over Bute Park and Cardiff Castle to the people of the city.

Your Wedding

Cardiff Castle is one of the most exclusive wedding venues in Wales and offers a range of rooms for you to stage the most memorable day of your life. The splendid grounds offer a perfect setting for your photographs too.

For the ceremony itself, you can choose the 15th century stone-vaulted Undercroft, one of the oldest rooms in the Castle, or the intimate surroundings of the Guest Tower Rooms, a self contained suite at the top of one of the Castle’s fairytale towers.

There are so many locations and options for you to consider: the roof-top terrace of the Interpretation Centre with magnificent views is perfect for a drinks reception; the elaborately decorated Banqueting Hall is so impressive for a wedding breakfast; and the Undercroft is just the place for dancing.. Our friendly, experienced team will be pleased to give you all the advice you need and on the day will make you and your guests feel at home in this tranquil and stunning setting.

In-house caterers provide a tailor-made service to suit all requirements with many menu options for you to choose.

As a city centre location, it also makes it easy to arrange accommodation for all your guests.

Cardiff Castle Wedding

Wedding ceremony

There are 2 rooms in which the civil ceremony can take place.

The Undercroft can accommodate up to 100 guests. It also has its own bar and reception area, and is available for hire after 2pm.

The Guest Tower Rooms can accommodate up to 30 guests and is a self contained area within the Castle. The Guest Tower Rooms are available for hire at any time of day.

Wedding receptions

For evening receptions, the elaborately decorated Banqueting Hall, (available after 6pm), can accommodate up to 100 guests for dinner. The Undercroft is available after 6.30pm and is suitable for dinner and dancing for up to 100 guests. The Interpretation Centre

( available after 6.30pm) is ideal for either a drinks reception or dancing for up to a maximum of 150 guests.

Access

We regret that due to the many steps within the Castle building, access for less mobile visitors is limited. However, the Undercroft and Interpretation Centre are wheelchair accessible. Please ask for further details.

Please note that car parking spaces cannot be provided within the Castle grounds other than for Bridal Cars or special circumstances ( by prior arrangement only).

For reasons of conservation, Cardiff Castle operates a strict no smoking policy.

With 37 bedrooms and an excellent bar and restaurant, this is a fine base for enjoying the Brecon Beacons National Park. Its five function rooms are ideal for intimate dinners, meetings, banquets, weddings, exhibitions and conferences.

A succesful and established Holistic & Beauty business now located here at the Castle. Choose from a range of treatments including Swedish Massage, Speciality Waxing, Manicures, Pedicures, Eye Treatments, Theraputic Massage and more!

Weddings at Brecon Castle

From intimate gatherings to large weddings, Brecon Castle is ideal for the bride and groom looking for a traditional venue with professional service and old-fashioned values. The building is an historic site linking back to the foundation of the town; a coaching inn, which grew out of the ruins of the castle and in 1809, became one of the first modern hotels in Wales.

The Castle retains the warmth and character of a coaching inn and the Regency Ballroom, with the adjoining remains of the Great Hall of Brecon Castle, is undoubtedly the most attractive and historic venue in Mid-Wales. The Brecon Beacons dominate the town and provide a picturesque backdrop to our ballroom and our gardens.

The team at the Castle is made up of dedicated professionals and our aim is to provide you with a day to remember. The food and service that we offer are merely a part of the total service that we provide to all brides. We understand that the cost of a wedding reception can escalate and endeavour to ease your budget by providing comprehensive advice from our experienced team.

If you are looking for a beautiful and historic setting for your wedding, then the marriage of great service, food and a choice of either contemporary or traditional Georgian and medieval surroundings is exactly what you want.

We have a small team of experienced staff who will attend to your every need. We are here to advise and we will tailor our services to your personal requirements to ensure that your day is how you always dreamed it would be….perfect.

The Castle has two rooms approved for Civil Wedding Ceremonies:

The Regency Ballroom is a grand and beautiful room on the ground floor with stunning views out onto the mountains and can accommodate larger ceremonies of up to 150 guests.

The Crug Room is ideal for smaller intimate ceremonies of up to 50 guests.

Once pronounced “husband and wife” you may wish to wander into our South-facing terrace (weather permitting) with the backdrop of historic Brecon Castle and amazing views up to the Brecon Beacon mountains, which will provide the perfect setting for your wedding day photographs.

Alternatively, there are many beautiful areas of the hotel that are equally appealing.

Whilst you have your photographs taken, your guests will be well looked after in the bar lounge, the ballroom or the Castle’s gardens as they enjoy their drinks reception.

After you have re-joined your guests the wedding breakfast will be served in either the Regency Ballroom or, for more intimate weddings, the Morgan Lounge, the Castle Lounge or the Crug Room.

We can happily accommodate wedding events be they small and intimate or for parties up to 150 and provide overnight accommodation in our 37 bedrooms. Our Regency Ballroom has been newly refurbished in delightful shades which complement whatever colour scheme the Bride may wish to choose. Our venue is increasingly popular for those who have chosen to get married in the nearby Brecon Cathedral, those who have chosen a civil ceremony and those who have ‘tied the knot’ abroad.

The Regency Ballroom

The Regency Ballroom is available for wedding breakfasts and seats up to 150 people and comes complete with its own private medieval bar and lounge which can accommodate a further 40+. Evening parties, buffets and hog-roasts* for up to 200 people are also available in this room.

Brecon Castle Wedding

The Crug Room and Restaurant…

The Crug Room and Restaurant caters for between 20 and 30 people.

The Morgan Lounge…

The Morgan Lounge is available for more intimate gatherings of 10-20 people.

Whatever you choose, ring us to arrange a meeting to discuss all aspects of your ‘special day’ and see the quality of the facilities we offer.

Brecon Castle Morgan Lounge

Wedding Accommodation at the Castle of Brecon Hotel

Our Wedding Accommodation provides every luxury and sense of romance needed for the perfect wedding evening or honeymoon.

The Beacons View rooms in the main building (including one four poster room) are decorated in a contemporary style, most with Flat Screen Televisions, colour TV, Hairdryers, Tea & Coffee making facilities, generous sized double or twin beds and ensuite bathrooms. All rooms are non-smoking, one disabled bedroom and disabled facilities are available. There are Internet access ports in all rooms in the main building and WiFi in all public areas (including the main ballroom and function rooms). The adjacent Mews (the former stable block of the castle) has a further 2 double or twin rooms and 4 Family/Walker units.

We can therefore accommodate up to 82 guests within our own establishment (excluding children) and the town and surrounding area of Brecon can offer a further (approx) 200 bedrooms, all within a few minutes distance. We recommend our principal South-facing rooms in the hotel, which are our largest rooms for honeymoon couples or those wanting a romantic night away.

Bodelwyddan Castle is situated in Denbighshire, North Wales. Set in 260 acres of magnificent parkland, the Castle is a partner of the National Portrait Gallery and is open to the public most days throughout the year.

As well as being a historic house and museum with a free audio tour available, the Castle also boasts large areas of formal garden and natural woodland. A particular feature is the area of practice trenches dating from the First World War.

It is an ideal location for a family day out with something for everybody, including an adventure playground, garden maze, Victorian games room, gift shop and tea room.

Have fun with the interactive exhibits in our specially created learning environment, where you can have an email photo taken dressed in Victorian costume.

Occasional special events and exhibitions are arranged through the year and we can also be the ideal setting for your wedding.

Wedding Ceremonies

There are three rooms available for civil marriage ceremonies at Bodelwyddan Castle. Set in magnificent parkland, the Castle houses nationally important collections of fine and decorative art from the National Portrait Gallery, Victoria & Albert Museum and Royal Academy.

Bodelwyddan Castle Wedding

The Sculpture Gallery houses some of the finest sculptures produced by 19th Century neoclassical sculptor John Gibson as well as portraits from the National Portrait Gallery Victorian collection. A magnificent vaulted ceiling and finely decorated fireplace add to the sumptuous decor that includes hand woven curtains in the Victorian style. The room will seat 90-100 guests and includes a beautiful Steinway Grand Piano that can be played before and after the wedding ceremony.

Bodelwyddan Castle Sculpture Gallery

The Ladies Drawing Room is a particular favourite amongst the visitors to the Castle. While small (maximum capacity 35 guests) it has a particular charm representing as it does the lighter early Victorian period. Portraits presented in this room include one of Florence Nightingale while several others once hung in the Novello family home in Italy. The yellow wall coverings and embroidered hangings provide the perfect backdrop for the portraits. At one end of the room, a large bay window provides views over the Castle’s rolling parkland.

Bodelwyddan Castle Ladies Drawing Room

The Dining Room will seat approximately 40 guests in surroundings that include portraits of famous personages of the 19th Century. Those portraits include figures such as William Gladstone, Joseph Chamberlain and Arthur Balfour. A particular feature of the room is an unusually decorated marble fireplace commissioned by the former owners of the house, the Williams family.

Bodelwyddan Castle Dining Room

Castle Gardens

The Castle is set within magnificent parkland and a formal garden originally designed by Mawson in 1910. There are also beautiful views of the Clwydian hills and the coastline from the Castle terrace.

The Castle grounds are open to the public and include formal gardens, woodland walks, historical sites, nature trails, and orienteering courses. Occasional special events are also arranged.

A particular feature is the area of practice trenches dating from the First World War.

A Children’s play area and picnic site are available (except during certain events). Tea and refreshments are available in Caffi Castell.

DOGS: Please note that dogs, other than guide dogs, are not permitted within the grounds of the Castle.
