Castle hotel Castell d’Empordà is an architectural jewel that was built eight centuries ago. The castle previously belonged to Pere Margarit, a captain who served under Columbus and who was himself the discoverer of Magarita Island.

When Albert Diks and Margo Vereijken saw this national monument, they realized that they had found the perfect place to transform their dreams into reality: a medieval castle, located in a region whose beauty is comparable to that of Tuscany or Provence, just minutes from the Mediterranean Sea and beautiful beaches. It was then that they decided to buy and restore the castle, finally transforming it into the magnificent castle hotel that it is today. Now the 12 hectare estate contains castle accommodation offering 38 high standard rooms and a fantastic restaurant, and is surrounded by a hundred-year-old forest and a splendid olive orchard for our guests’ exclusive enjoyment.

The castle hotel Castell D’Empordà lies in Girona, a beautiful city in Northern Catalonia strategically connected to almost all major European airports. A flight to Girona from other regions of Europe takes a maximum of two hours.

Castell d'Emporda Accommodation

Castle Rooms

Located in the original areas of the castle. The medieval castle rooms include all of the comforts required of a high standard luxury hotel room, combined with the charm of a medieval castle. The decoration incorporates the stone walls very well: curtains made from Indian silk; comfortable cushions; hand-made tiles brought from Marrakech; contrasting colours that evoke nature, night and day … And finally, a view of the Empordàn countryside transports us to an idyllic dreamscape. Your stay in one of our medieval castle rooms at Castell d’Emporda will be, without a doubt, unforgettable.

Garden Rooms

This spectacular new building was constructed in the eastern part of the castle’s mountain, near the pool and with a Rooftop Garden. Every garden room has old oak floors, silk curtains and furniture from China and Italy. These romantic rooms at our luxury hotel also have private balconies from which you will be able to contemplate the beautiful sunsets of Empordà. The only exception is room 16 and 13, which does not have a balcony.

Suite Pere Margarit

This 80 square metre romantic room was the master bedchamber of the medieval castle. After studying the life and travels of Captain Pere Margarit, the famous designer Menno Kroon has created a majestic ambiance without sacrificing the high standards of luxury accommodation. Objects which originally belonged to the Margarit family, such as Tibetan rugs, stones brought from India, stained glass windows draped with silk curtains and a Victorian bathtub were used to decorate the suite.

Tower Rooms

Located in the castle’s tower, these rooms have the most spectacular view. Decorated in an intimate fashion, these rooms are the ideal option for couples who wish to spend a romantic weekend getaway. We must mention that due to limited space, these rooms only have a shower, without subtracting any of the other services that we provide in the other rooms in the castle hotel. These rooms are not advisable for the elderly, as they are only accessible via a rather long staircase.

Garden Suites

The Garden Suites are a new option at the hotel Castell d’Empordà that will surprise our guests. In order to do so, we have counted on the help of one of the best interior decorators in Spain: Cristina Gabas.

The contemporary design, along with classic references, incorporates well into the landscape. Light colours with medieval reminiscences and natural materials, such as ancient oak, teakwood and unfinished stone evoke a natural setting.

The rooms are spacious at 58 square metres and are formed by two areas: the sleeping area and a sitting area. Both the bathroom and the bedroom have balconies with spectacular views of the fields of Empordà.

Restaurant

Enjoy the most exquisite meals in a perfect ambience. Our Restaurant is a meeting point for hotel guests and connoisseurs of good food from the area.

Every day our guests can enjoy breakfast; lunch, simple afternoon snacks by the pool, or a romantic dinner at Castell d’Empordà.

The ambience in the restaurant, the castle’s old wine cellar, which is today a bar, and the terraces, invite you to relax, enjoy the views, the sunset, feel the gentle Mediterranean breeze…

Kitchen

The press has recognized Castell d’Empordà as a reference point in local gastronomy, noting that the hotel stands among restaurants in Girona out not only due to its tranquillity, spaciousness, luxury and comfort, but additionally due to its exquisite cuisine.

Our chefs, Joost Ruiten & Abel Cardozo, will delight you with special dishes created with the freshest ingredients available.

Our kitchen is the heart of the hotel. Each dish reverberates with the feeling of the castle: the delicious Mediterranean cuisine that grows in our kitchen garden or that is brought each day from neighbouring farms and nearby fishing ports.

On 2007 our restaurant appears as recommended in the Michelin Guide.

Bar

Located in the old wine cellar of the medieval castle and tastefully decorated, the hotel bar is the perfect place to relax while you enjoy a glass of wine or your favourite cocktail, all the while enjoying a restful atmosphere.
