Château de Bagnols is the finest five-star deluxe château hotel in France and is regarded by many as the finest vineyard chateau hotel in the world. Discovered by Lady Hamlyn in 1987 in a derelict state, she painstakingly restored the château with much energy and vision, to its former glory, revealing Renaissance wall and ceiling paintings created during the château’s finest period when nearby Lyon was one of Europe’s great Renaissance cities.

Dating from the 13th century, the chateau features impressive towers, the original dry moat, honey-coloured stone known as pierres dorées and a dramatic entrance across a drawbridge. The Château de Bagnols is one of France’s major historic monuments as well as a unique luxury hotel with 21 of the most superb rooms and suites in France.

Château de Bagnols is set among vineyards, forests and green hills in the heart of the beautiful Beaujolais countryside in south-east France, just 17 miles from Lyon which has an international airport. A train from Paris or Geneva takes only two hours and the ski slopes of the Alps are a 90-minute drive away.

The Michelin star Salle des Gardes restaurant offers diners the most wonderful selection of regional specialities as well as an impressive selection of French wines. Outside, the sun-facing terrace, shaded by 100-year-old lime trees, provides the most spectacular view of the Beaujolais countryside.

Much more than a hotel…

Everything has been done to attain authenticity and the highest quality… The silverware has been specially patinated to achieve a softer, antique finish, the pistol-handled knives were reproduced in England following an original 18th century design, the glasses are made in Alsace exclusively for Château de Bagnols following an 18th century Burgundian design and are blown in the 18th century glass mixture specially re-created for the Château and the Salle des Gardes armorial plates and dishes have been made exclusively for the Château at Limoges.

Gourmet Wedding Dinner (available every days in low season & from Sunday to Thursday in high season)

We can accommodate up to 130 people for a wedding cocktail reception in our Château courtyard, followed by a gourmet dinner prepared by our Michelin-starred chef and his award-winning team in our Cuvage (or Winery).

including Le Cuvage, the candles in the room, supplies for the dance floor and Jazz band playing from 7pm till midnight.

Winery Wedding Package

If you would like to enjoy a wedding cocktail followed by a gourmet dinner and then dancing, Le Cuvage (or Winery) and La Salle des Tonneaux (or Cellar) are ideal rooms in which to dine and dance the night away.

Le Cuvage can accommodate up to 130 guests and La Salle des Tonneaux, the ancient cellar with golden stones, located beneath Le Cuvage allows you and your guests to enjoy music and dancing until the early hours (3am).

The eight closest bedrooms must also be booked when celebrating with music and dancing.

Rooms and Suites at Château de Bagnols, Beaujolais

The design of the breathtaking bedrooms, surely the finest hotel accommodation in France, are testimony to the exceptional talents of Lady Hamlyn in restoring the chateau so fastidiously whilst creating the definitive luxury chateau hotel. The 21 bedrooms include eight apartments (six in the château itself and two in the Residence) that bear the names of those who have contributed to the château’s distinguished past: the Chambre des Seigneurs d’Oingt, the Suite des Seigneurs de Balzac, the Chambre de Madame de Sévigné and the Claude Marie Chavanais Suite.

The restoration of many of these rooms has revealed the most remarkable Renaissance and 18th century wall and ceiling frescoes. The rooms, all with private bathrooms, many of which are located in the towers and therefore circular with arrow slit windows, have been furnished with exceptional care, using soft velvets and shimmering silks and complemented by rare and beautiful antiques. They also possess the very latest telecommunications system.

Several of the suites have their salons in a corner tower, some with sofas which can convert into an extra bed to make a family suite. The influence of Italian Renaissance decoration can be seen in the work of the 17th-century painters, who included the most fashionable ideas in their decorative schemes: landscape panels, fanciful friezes and bold ceiling arabesques.

Nothing is left to chance, nothing is too much trouble – especially in the kitchen. Lyon is world famous for its cooking and food markets, and the Chef at the Château de Bagnols is justly proud of his seductive restaurant menus, which offer a range of regional specialities, traditional spit-roasted meats and game and inspired new dishes.

Meanwhile, the Sommelier offers guests, from his splendid and varied wine list, all the subtle varieties of taste of the various Beaujolais wines, including the ten celebrated Beaujolais crus, as well as any of the great wines of neighbouring Burgundy. Indeed, the Chateau de Bagnols wine list features the finest wines of France and many other countries.

On fine days, you might choose to eat out of doors on the south-facing terrace under the shade of the 100-year-old lime trees; a sublimely romantic location. From here, you look down to the gently splashing fountain, which stands at the centre of the park surrounded by an orchard of cherry trees underplanted with wild flowers. Beyond, there lies a dazzling panorama, which melts into the hazy distance of hills covered in vineyards and woods.

Lunch is served in the restaurant every day from noon to 1.45pm. Dinner is served in the restaurant every evening from 7:30pm to 9:45pm.
